EQUINE VETERINARY EDUCATION / AE / SEPTEMBER 2018

McCue et al. 2003), treatment with a corticosteroid provides only short-term improvement (Lindberg et al.1985). Based on the similar histopathological lesions of horses

with substantial eosinophilic infiltrates apparently restricted to the small intestine (IFEE, DEE) (Makinen et al. 2008) and ascending and descending colons (Edwards et al. 2000; De Bont et al. 2013, 2018), IFEE and DEE might have a similar aetiology and pathogenesis. The aetiology and pathogenesis of MEED probably differs from that of IFEE and DEE, and unquestionably, horses with MEED have a worse prognosis for survival than do horses with EDCI. Until the aetiologies of eosinophilic intestinal diseases are determined, a combination of clinical and morphological diagnoses must suffice to guide management and prognosis of horses with these diseases.
