MEMBERSHIP Members in the News


Dr. Jerry Black named to Nominating Committee for proposed racing legislation Dr. Jerry Black, visiting professor at Texas Tech School of Veterinary Medicine and an emeritus professor and Wagonhound Land and Livestock chair in Equine Sciences at Colorado State University, has been appointed by supporters of the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act to the Nominating Committee responsible for selecting members of the board of directors of the HISA Authority and its two standing committees: Anti-doping and Medication Control, and Racetrack Safety.


Dr. Jerry Black


A veterinary graduate of Colorado State University, Dr. Black served as AAEP president in 2002 and is a former chair of the American Horse Council board of trustees.


Two members awarded Morris Animal Foundation research grants Drs. Sian Durward-Akhurst and Annette McCoy are among the researchers awarded large animal health research grants in mid-September from Morris Animal Foundation.


Dr. Durward-Akhurst, postdoctoral research associate at the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine, received grant support for her project, “Identification and Validation of Alleles Responsible for Cardiac Arrhythmias including Atrial Fibrillation.” She received her veterinary degree from the University of Glasgow.


Dr. McCoy, assistant professor of equine surgery at the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine, received grant funding for her project, “Risk Genes for Osteochondritis: An Integrated Approach.” Dr. McCoy

PATH Intl. honors AAEP members for service to equine therapy programs The Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International recently honored eight AAEP-member veteri- narians for care provided to horses engaged in equine- assisted activities and therapies (EAAT). Among the honorees was Dr. Ashley Wegman, who practices with DeWitt Veterinary Clinic in DeWitt, Iowa, and was named 2020 PATH Intl.Veterinarian of the Year for her work with New Kingdom Trailriders in Sherrard, Ill.


PATH Intl. certifies professionals and accredits equine centers that offer therapeutic riding and horsemanship activities. In addition to Dr.Wegmann, AAEP members recognized as Veterinarian of the Year for their respective region, along with the EAAT program they support, were:
