AAEP members appointed to Michigan commission Drs. Don Ryker, Nancy Frank and Frank Nickels are among seven individuals appointed to the newly formed Michigan Horse Racing Advisory Commission by Gov. Rick Snyder. The commission will govern the operation and promotion of the state’s racing industry and make recommendations to the state legislature.


Dr. Ryker, who chairs the commission, owns Don Ryker DVM and Associates and is an adjunct professor at the Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM). He received his veterinary degree from the University of Missouri.


Dr. Frank serves as an assistant state veterinarian and is an adjunct faculty member at the Michigan State University CVM. She earned her veterinary degree from Michigan State.

Dr. Nickels is a professor at the Michigan State University CVM and recipient of the AAEP’s Distinguished Educator – Academic Award in 2013. He received his veterinary degree from Washington State University.


Dr. Joseph Foerner, arthroscopic surgery pioneer, dies at 75


AAEP Honor Roll member Dr. Joseph Foerner, among the first veterinarians to use arthroscopic surgery in equine practice, died Nov. 7 at the age of 75.


Dr. Foerner was a partner in Illinois Equine Hospital in Naperville, Ill., and served as a consultant to the Brookfield and Lincoln Park Zoos and the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago as well as Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus in Washington, D.C. During his partial retirement, he was a surgical instructor at the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine and consultant at Critter Care in Plano, Ill.


Dr. Joseph Foerner


A 1965 graduate of the University of Illinois, Dr. Foerner served on the Racing Ethics and Infractions committees and as an On Call spokesperson for races from Chicago-area tracks. He was Emeritus Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons, where he had served as president, chairman of the board and regent. Dr. Foerner received the AVMA’s Practitioner Research Award in 1997.


Present your research at the 2017 annual convention


AAEP members and others are invited to submit papers for consideration for pre- sentation during the AAEP’s 63rd Annual Convention in San Antonio, Texas, Nov. 17-21, 2017. The primary author of selected papers will receive complimenta- ry registration and a stipend to support travel to the meeting.


Eligible for consideration are scientific papers, “how-to” papers, review papers, abstracts ≤ 250 words and The Business of Practice papers. In a change from prior years,


all paper presentations will be limited to 15 minutes with an additional 5 minutes for Q&A.


Papers must be submitted by 3:00 p.m. ET on March 15, 2017, at http://aaep2016.abstractcentral.com. Authors should visit the site in advance to set up a profile and provide paper and author information before uploading the paper when it is finished. Complete considerations and ethical guidelines are available in the Instructions for Authors available on the site.
