asthma’ whether atopy is present or not, ‘mild, moderate, or severe’ based on severity, and ‘eosinophilic asthma or neutrophilic asthma’ based on cytology. This allows both for flexibility and consistency over time, as some terms fall out of favour when some subtypes prove themselves of little use in predicting outcome or response to therapy. We are only starting to understand the causes and


pathways leading to airway inflammation and obstruction in horses. The discovery of the triggering factors, genetic predisposition, inflammatory pathways, and resulting airway remodelling features are likely to arise in the coming years. A broad terminology such as ‘equine asthma’ would be inclusive to emerging phenotypes and endotypes, and facilitate communication between clinicians, researchers and clients. Is the time primed for equine asthma? I believe we are long
