the known short duration of action of oxytocin, some studies have demonstrated no effect of oxytocin administration on the proximal or distal portions of the oesophagus as measured by manometric pressure within the oesophagus of healthy horses (Wooldridge et al. 2002). However, other studies have demonstrated some effect on contractility as measured by piezoelectric pressure transducer (Meyer et al. 2000). In this study, the placement of the transducer induced internal pressure on the oesophagus and then measured the oesophageal resistance to that pressure after the administration of oxytocin. This introduces the question of whether the effect of the oxytocin would be similar in the absence of pressure within the oesophagus, such as in these stricture cases.

Conclusion

These 2 cases together make for a nice review of the process necessary to evaluate foals presenting for milk regurgitation. They also demonstrate that oesophageal stricture can begin a cascade of additional problems including megaoesophagus cranial to the stricture and aspiration pneumonia resulting from milk regurgitation. Bearing in mind these cases, clinicians dealing with cases of congenital oesophageal stricture should remember the importance of a complete work-up before attempting intervention as there may be multiple strictures involved and there is the possibility of thoracic vascular anomalies that may complicate the treatment and prognosis of distal oesophageal strictures.
