• Average equine internship compensation in 2023 increased 23% to $44,822.
• Excluding internships and any emergency fees, average compensation for new equine veterinarians in 2023 grew to $94,389, with a significantly narrowed gender wage gap of $1,000 in new graduate salaries.
• Average salary in 2023 was $110,000 for an equine associate and $138,000 for an equine practice owner.
• Across the entire veterinary profession, 4% were equine veterinarians and 62% of those equine veteri- narians were females.
The AVMA survey data constituted just a small portion of this educational session, which otherwise provided a com- prehensive look at the significant progress of the Compensation and Practice Culture subcommittees, resources currently available for practices, and valuable discussion on important considerations like the gender wage gap, four-day work week, provision of employee benefits such as parental leave, and more.

Challenge issued During the Opening Session, The Foundation for the Horse announced the $500,000 Coyote Rock Ranch Challenge for Education and Research. The challenge seeks to raise $500,000 in 2024 that, when coupled with a $500,000 gift from Mrs. Penelope Knight and her Coyote Rock Ranch, will enable The Foundation to award $1 million in educational scholarships and research grants in the current year. Promising investigator honored The Foundation for the Horse on Nov. 30 presented the $5,000 EQUUS Foundation Research Fellow to Dr. Amanda Avison (center), a PhD candidate at the Ontario Veterinary College, who is investigating sudden cardiac death in performance horses.
