Dr. Rebecca Bishop honored by BEVA Dr. Rebecca Bishop, an equine surgery resident at the University of Illinois, received the Peter Rossdale Equine Veterinary Journal (EVJ) Open Award during the British Equine Veterinary Association Congress in mid-September.


A 1976 veterinary graduate of The Ohio State University, Dr. Reed is an internal medicine specialist at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Ky., who also serves on The Foundation for the Horse Development Council.


Dr. Rebecca Bishop receives her award from outgoing BEVA President Dr. Huw Griffiths.


The award is given for the paper that best achieves EVJ’s mission to publish articles that influence and improve clinical practice and/or add significantly to the scientific knowledge that underpins and supports veterinary medicine in relation to the horse.


Her paper, Effect of omeprazole and sucralfate on gastrointestinal injury in a fasting/NSAID model, was co- authored by Drs. Ann M. Kemper, Pamela A. Wilkins and Annette McCoy, and published in the July 2022 issue. Dr. Bishop received her veterinary degree in 2017 from Tufts University.


Dr. Lisa Fortier


Three enter research hall of fame Distinguished researchers Dr. Lisa Fortier, Dr. Katrin Hinrichs and Dr. Stephen Reed were inducted into the University of Kentucky Equine Research Hall of Fame on Oct. 26 for their outstanding contributions to equine science, primarily in the areas of joint disease and regenerative medicine, assisted reproductive techniques, and equine neurology, respectively.

Dr. Fortier is the James Law Professor of Surgery at Cornell University and editor-in-chief of the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association. She received her veterinary degree in 1991 from Colorado State University.


Dr. Stephen Reed


Dr. Hinrichs, who in 2020 received the AAEP Research Award, is the Harry Werner Endowed Professor of Equine Medicine and chair of the Department of Clinical Studies at the University of Pennsylvania’s New Bolton Center. She earned her veterinary degree from University of California, Davis in 1978.


Dr. Tom Lenz re-appointed to advisory board Dr. Tom Lenz is among three members of the National Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board to be re-appointed to three-year terms by the Bureau of Land Management and U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service. The board provides guidance and recommenda- tions to the BLM and Forest Service on the management and protection of wild free-roaming horses and burros on public lands.

Dr. Tom Lenz


A veterinary graduate of the University of Missouri in 1975, Dr. Lenz has been a prominent voice for the equine industry and horse welfare as AAEP past president and former chair of its Welfare and Public Policy Advisory Council; and service as a member or chair of the welfare committees of the AVMA, American Horse Council, American Quarter Horse Association, Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and Missouri Veterinary Medical Association.


PATH Intl. honors AAEP members The Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International on Nov. 15 honored seven AAEP members and a practice co-owned by AAEP members for outstand- ing service provided for the benefit of the equine-assisted services industry. Among the honorees was Dr. Beau Whitaker, a partner at Brazos Valley Equine Hospital in Salado, Texas, who was named 2022 PATH Intl. National Veterinarian of the Year for his work with the Ride On Center for Kids in Georgetown, Texas.


In addition to Dr. Whitaker, AAEP members recognized as Veterinarian of the Year for their respective region, along with the program they support, were:
