Benefit from the diverse perspectives of colleagues on non-medical aspects of practice that are important for personal and professional success by listening to or following the monthly AAEP Practice Life podcast.

Recent episodes have centered on the benefits and challenges of focusing your practice on specialty services, best practices with practice management technology and software, and how to establish boundaries to flourish professionally and personally.

During a discussion of what to do if a practice owner doesn’t respect or encourage boundaries, Dr. Marisa Markey of McKee-Pownall Equine Services in Ontario, Canada, said young veterinarians are in a unique advocacy position due to their high demand.

“You’re probably very needed at that practice,” she said. “Even if boundaries haven’t previously been established or respected or even thought about, hopefully you’re in a position where you can have a frank conversation that you love this profession, want to stay in this profession and this is how you need things to be set up so you can do that—whether that’s your personal boundaries and personal time, or your safety boundaries, or whatever it may be. Hopefully you can at least have that conversation and start working toward that, even if that’s a big culture shift for the practice.”
