VIII AAEP News June 2024
ASSOCIATIONFOUNDA Apply for Foundation research grant funding by June 30
The Foundation for the Horse is accepting grant proposals until June 30 for both of its equine research grant programs, which seek to help pioneer medical advances in equine health.
Young Investigators Research Grants Graduate students, fellows and residents are eligible for up to $20,000 in funding for the study of key diseases and disorders affecting equine health. Pilot studies or preliminary studies that are part of a major study or which will lead to a major project are of particular interest; small standalone projects will also be considered.
Since this program’s inception in 2019, The Foundation has awarded $496,771 for 26 projects at nine universities in support of exceptional science conducted by emerging researchers.
Additional information, including application instruc- tions, requirements, and selection criteria, is available at
foundationforthehorse.org/young-investigators.
Innovation and Discovery Research Grants Individuals with a background in equine research and a previous record of research publication are encouraged to submit proposals focused on areas of equine medicine that will improve the science needed to elevate the health and welfare of the horse. A minimum of two projects, and likely more thanks to the $500,000 Coyote Rock Ranch Challenge gift received in 2023, will each receive up to $50,000 in funding in 2024.
Dr. Laurent Couëtil was among the Innovation and Discovery Research Grant recipients in 2023 for his project “Genomic Epidemiology of Fungi Identified in Bronchoalveolar Lavage Fluid from Asthmatic Horses in the United States.”
Since inception of the program in 2022, The Foundation has awarded $443,981 for 10 projects at nine institutions. These grants are made possible by a generous gift from Mrs. Penelope Knight and her Coyote Rock Ranch along with other donors supporting equine research.
Building on Mrs. Knight’s gift in 2023, The Foundation has set a goal to match that gift by the end of 2024 by raising an additional $500,000 dedicated to Innovation and Discovery Research projects. To make a gift toward this matching initiative, visit
