FIGURE 3 When the pen size becomes larger, the use of overlapping fences in the gateways slows the horse down to a walk to move between pens. At this size, the horse can trot a few steps but will find it difficult to canter and cannot build up any considerable speed. While two pens are shown here, we would often use multiple pens.
CONCLUSION
Box rest is inevitably stressful for the horse and usually also the owner, yet we often underestimate both. Careful consideration should be given to how we can improve the horse ' s welfare under these chal- lenging conditions. Involving the owner in decision making, discussing a range of potential options and the feasibility of each option in their individual circumstances maximises the likelihood of success.
